    Help Me Choose:

    What is an immune system?

According to John’s – Hopkins a healthy immune system protects your body from outside invaders, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and toxins (chemicals produced by microbes). It is made up of different organs, cells, and proteins that work together.

To function properly the immune system needs balance and clean access to the defensive parts of the body. In other words, all of the body’s health assets have to be functioning well to provide an adequate defense. The immune system exists in the stomach, the marrow of the bones, the mucus producing parts of the body (sinus and intestines), the lungs and so forth.

Remember that the immune system is a system. It’s not a single organ like a liver or a heart and it doesn’t have a specific location. For a techy person it might be a little like an malware protection program. It’s in the computer but it roams and integrates with every program using every asset available to protect the computer from unwanted outside actors that could cause harm.

Now the question remains; What can I do to improve my “immune system”? Probably the first defense is a healthy lifestyle. We have all had the “HEALTHY LIFESTYLE” talk, right? A healthy balanced lifestyle is probably the first and biggest step towards immune health. Here are a few lifestyle choices that can have a positive effect on the harmony and balance of your immune system:

  • Smoking! Don’t smoke, this is a poor lifestyle choice from beginning to end. Your immune system will definitely be hampered by this habit-forming choice.
  • Diet. A diet that consists of more fruits, vegetables, lean protein like fish and chicken will benefit more than just your immune system. Try to avoid sugary carbonated drinks, deep fried foods, “fast foods” in general, junk foods in excess like chips and candy.
  • Exercise! Nothing, and I mean nothing has more effect on overall health and well-being that exercise. Circulation, stress elimination, and those happy endorphins are all positive effects of exercise.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. This doesn’t mean that you have to be model skinny (which is also unhealthy). It means that a healthy weight is a contributing factor to the clean access your immune system needs to utilize the defense mechanisms available for your protection.
  • Sleep. Rest and relaxation, stress management, rejuvenation all happen when we get to that deep sleep. This can be a BIG distractor (lack of good sleep) or contributor to your immune health.

  • There is some evidence that micronutrients or the lack of micronutrients may influence the immune system. As an example, zinc, iron, copper, magnesium, calcium, folic acid, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, and a host of other micronutrients are necessary for a healthy immune response. If you feel that your diet isn’t providing ample supply of these or other micronutrients you might consider a supplement to give you what you feel you are missing. Taking a supplement may bring health benefits that assist in providing the balance and clean communication that your immune system requires to be at its optimal level.
