Research:

Kelp

  • The National Institutes of Health (NIH) say that seaweed, such as kelp, is one of the best natural food sources of iodine.
  • Iodine is an essential component in maintaining a healthy thyroid function.
  • Kelp contains one of the best sources for organic iodine. As stated before iodine nourishes the thyroid gland.
  • The thyroid requires iodine to function properly. The human body does not manufacture iodine. That makes it imperative to get iodine through diet and good dietary supplements.
  • Kelp is also high in B vitamins psaccorides and polypsaccorides.

  • Bugleweed:

  • Bugleweed is a bitter, pungent tasting, aromatic herb, with astringent properties.
  • It originated in Europe but is native to North America, found in areas east of the Mississippi River.
  • Bugleweed is from the Lamiaceae family. It contains compounds called rosmarinic acid, lithospermic, and chlorogenic acids. It is believed that these acids support Thyroid function.
  • It is thought that the oxidating properties of lycopin or lycopus (one of the tannins in the herb) activates the rosmaric, lithospermic and chlorogenic acids. The activation is a key to the interaction with the Thyroid.
  • A surprising statement by the University of Michigan School of Medicine
  • The modern applications of bugleweed, unlike many herbs, do not match its traditional use. Historically, bugleweed and related species were used for coughs and as a sedative. Today, the main use of this herb is for strengthening and supporting the Thyroid and all of the functions that it performs.

  • Black Walnut Hull:

  • Black Walnut is one of the only inland sources of organic naturally occuring iodine.
  • As mentioned before Iodine is essential component for a healthy Thyroid gland.
  • Black Walnut is also high in selenium. This antioxidant supports healthy thyroid function.
  • Selenium has selenoproteins which are the actual antioxidants. Selenoproteins have been called the “antioxidant warriors".
  • Black Walnuts contain essential minerals like iodine and manganese, which play a key role in supporting thyroid function.

  • Icelandic Sea Moss:

  • Sea moss is rich in iodine, which is good for your thyroid.
  • Sea moss (aka Irish moss) has many health benefits. One of the most prevalant is its interaction with the thyroid gland.
  • Sea Moss is loaded with vitamins and minerals
  • Some of the nutrients contained in sea moss include: Vitamin B2, Vitamin B12, Calcium, Chromium, Magnesium, Zinc, plus Beta Carotene and some Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids.
  • Finally and most importantly Irish Moss contains the naturally occuring thyroid hormone precursor DI-Iodothyronine (DIT), and the thyroid hormones Thyroxin (T4) and Tri-iodothyronine (T3).

    What is a Thyroid Gland

What is the thyroid and where is it located?

Your thyroid gland is a small gland, normally weighing less than an ounce. It is a butterfly shaper gland normally located in the front of the neck. There are two halves of the thyroid called lobes that lie along the windpipe and are joined together by a narrow band of thyroid tissue, known as the isthmus. The thyroid’s job is to make thyroid hormone, which is secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body. Thyroid hormone is essential to help each cell in all types of tissue and organ to function properly. For example, thyroid hormone helps the body use energy and stay warm. It also keeps the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs functioning the way they should.

    How does my thyroid work?

A brief synopsis of the thyroid function is it; controls how quickly the body burns energy, makes proteins, controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones and interacts either directly or indirectly with most other body functions. The thyroid participates in these processes by producing thyroid hormones, thyroxin and triiodothyronine. The principle element that a properly functioning thyroid uses to produce the hormones is iodine. Iodine is fairly rare in many foods, thus supplementation is necessary in many areas in the world. The major thyroid hormone secreted by the thyroid gland is thyroxine, referred to as T4 because it contains four iodine atoms. Once the thyroid produces and secretes the T4 it is converted to triiodothyronine (T3) by the removal of one iodine atom. This occurs mainly in the liver. The amount of T4 produced by the thyroid gland is controlled by another hormone, which is made in the pituitary gland located at the base of the brain, called thyroid stimulating hormone (abbreviated TSH). The amount of TSH that the pituitary sends into the blood stream depends on the amount of T4 that the pituitary senses. If the pituitary senses very little T4, then it produces more TSH to tell the thyroid gland to produce more T4. Once the T4 in the blood stream goes above a certain level, the pituitary’s production of TSH is shut off. In fact, the thyroid and pituitary act in many ways like a heater and a thermostat. When the heater is off and it becomes cold, the thermostat reads the temperature and turns on the heater. When the heat rises to an appropriate level, the thermostat senses this and turns off the heater. Thus, the thyroid and the pituitary, like a heater and thermostat, turn on and off. Iodine would then act as the fuel that the heater uses. Without a proper supply of fuel the thermostat and the heater can not function properly and the rest of the house will go cold.

    What does my thyroid effect?

The thyroxine that is produced by the thyroid is not only critical in humans to regulate metabolism and growth it is critical throughout the whole animal kingdom. As an example, administering a thyroid-blocking agent such as propylthiouracil (PTU) to amphibians can prevent tadpoles from metamorphosing into frogs; conversely, administering thyroxine will trigger the metamorphosis. In humans, children born with thyroid hormone deficiency will have physical growth and development problems, and brain development can also be severely impaired, in the condition referred to as cretinism. Newborn children in many developed countries are now routinely tested for thyroid hormone deficiency as part of newborn screening by analysis of a drop of blood. Children with thyroid hormone deficiency are treated by supplementation with synthetic thyroxine, which enables them to grow and develop normally.

The thyroid vitalizes every cell in the body thyroxin is involved in the response of the cell to sympathetic stimulation. It assists in the control of tissue differentiation. The thyroid controls and regulates body fat, increases the power and rate of heart function, controls coagulation time, stimulates the mind, controls intestinal activity and aids in the function of the pancreas. It helps to harmonize the activity of the suprarenal glands and works in cooperation with the parathyroid, which regulates the action of mineral salts in the system, especially calcium. It acts in conjunction with the pituitary gland, thereby exerting a profound influence on metabolism in general. As you can see almost every bodily function depends upon thyroid in one way or another. As mentioned before the thyroid participates in burning energy, making proteins and controls sensitivity to certain hormones. It also aids in brain function, muscle movement and influences mental and emotional balance. One could say that the thyroid affects almost every facet of a normal life and without it a feeling of health and well being is almost impossible to obtain. It is important to do all that we can to protect the functions of a healthy thyroid. Daily supplementation should be a consideration.

    Health Information:

The thyroid, like the other glands in the body, plays a critical part in many bodily functions.

Thyroid is located in the neck. It stores and produces and secretes hormones that affect the function of virtually every organ in our bodies.

The thyroid's hormones regulate vital body functions, including:

  • Breathing
  • Heart rate
  • Central and peripheral nervous systems
  • Body weight
  • Muscle strength
  • Menstrual cycles
  • Body temperature
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Other Thyroid Functions

  • The Thyroid secretes thyroxin, which controls growth, regulates the metabolism, controls body temperature and influences mental and emotional balance.
  • Thyroid issues can cause weight gain or loss, intolerance to temperature change and undesirable mood swings.
  • The thyroid is very important in proper calcium metabolism.
  • The relationship between the reproductive functions and the thyroid gland is of special importance.
  • The Thyroid also vitalizes every cell in the body.
  • The response of the cell to sympathetic stimulation is enabled by thyroxin. It assists in the control of tissue differentiation.
  • The thyroid controls and regulates body fat, increases the power and rate of heart function, controls coagulation time, stimulates the mind, controls intestinal activity and aids in the function of the pancreas.
  • The Thyroid helps to harmonize the activity of the suprarenal glands and works in cooperation with the parathyroid.
  • The Parathyroid regulates the action of mineral salts in the system, especially calcium.
  • It acts in conjunction with the pituitary gland, thereby exerting a profound influence on metabolism in general.
  • Maintaining Thyroid Function. It is imperative that the thyroid functions properly. There are too many important body functions that are tied to the thyroid. There is a hormone test for the thyroid. A TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) test is done to find out if your thyroid gland is working the way it should. It can tell you if it’s overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism).
