Valerian Root:

  • Valerian has been used traditionally as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Its therapeutic uses were described by Hippocrates, and in the 2nd century, Galen prescribed valerian for insomnia. In the 16th century, it was used to treat nervousness, trembling, headaches, and heart palpitations.
  • A study published on National Institutes of Health resulted in these findings; "After 28 days, the group receiving the valerian extract showed a decrease in insomnia symptoms on all the assessment tools compared with the placebo group."
  • "Our search yielded a total of 370 articles. Sixteen randomized, controlled trials, examining a total of 1093 patients, satisfied all inclusion criteria." ... "This systematic review suggests that valerian may improve sleep quality." (U.S. National Library of Medicine)


  • Kava root is traditionally used to calm anxiety, stress, restlessness and treat insomnia. It’s also used for ADHD symptoms, epilepsy, psychosis, depression, migraines and other headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • Kava is currently being studied for the treatment of generalised anxiety disorder. Preliminary studies signify great success but long term studies need to be conducted to examine dosing and efficacy. (National Institutes of Health)

St John's Wort:

  • Traditionally St. John’s wort is most commonly used as a natural remedy for depression and trouble sleeping. It’s also used to treat moodiness, and symptoms of menopause.
  • St. John’s wort has been used for centuries for mental health conditions and is widely prescribed for depression in Europe.
  • An article on WebMD states that; "Multiple studies have found St. John's wort helpful for depression. In fact, a few showed that St. John's wort was as effective as some prescription antidepressants."
    • It also states; St. John's wort has also been studied in the treatment of other mood disorders, anxiety disorders, ... insomnia, PMS, and menopausal symptoms.
    • Warning: There are conflicting results in some other studies and there are some drug interactions to be aware of when using full dosages of St John's Wort.
