  • Eyebright is a plant. The parts that grow above the ground have been used traditionally to make medicine.
    • There are certain phytonutrients present in this herb that can reduce the symptoms of eye discomfort.
      • The aucubin found in Eyebright has an anti-inflammatory action, that may sooth tired eyes.
      • Tannins act as astringents to help dry up secretions and relieve inflammation of the mucous membranes. 
    • Eyebright has also been applied to the eyes as a poltice because of the astringent actions. Remember that astringents dry up mucous and reduce mucous membrane inflammation. Both actions are important to the health and support of the human eye.
  • The scientific name for Eyebright is; Euphrasia officinalis L. Its common name most likely came from the doctors and apothecarys (predicesors to pharmacists) who found the plant useful for the eyes and eyesight.
    • Eyebright has been tested for efficacy on corneal cells in human eyes. The results/ conclusion below are quoted from this study (LINK):
      • All tested extracts decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine expression (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) and also anti-inflammatory IL-10 expression by human corneal cells.
      • We show that the ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts of Eyebright (E. officinalis L.) can be satisfactorily used as a supplemental therapy in human corneal disorders.
  • Herbalists classify Bayberry as an astringent. Astringents shrink membranes that are inflammed and dry mucous.
  • Bayberry contains an active flavonoid called Myricetin. It is extracted from the barks, leaves, and roots of the plant known as myrica rubrae (Bayberry). It is very well known for being an antioxidant and free radical scavenger. You might say that Myricetin is a mighty hunter and its prey is any free radical that might cause havoc.
  • Oxidation and inflammation are implicated in the etiology of age related eye diseases. There is evidence that dietary antioxidants and anti-inflammatories may provide benefit in decreasing the risk of age-related eye disease.
    • Antioxidants have been proven to be effective in the prevention of certain age realted eye diseases (Nutrients For the Aging Eye by Helen M Rasmussen and Elizabeth J Johnson  Clin Interv Aging. 2013; 8: 741–748. PMCID: PMC3693724)
  • The Myricetin in Bayberry also has a natural antibiotic that may be helpful.
    • Bayberry contains an antibiotic chemical called myricetin which has been shown to be effective against a broad range of bacteria and protozoa. Myricetin's antibiotic action supports Bayberry's traditional use against diarrhoea and dysentery. (Gafner, S., Wolfender, J. L., Mavi, S., and Hostettmann, K. Fennel Seeds
  • Fennel seeds are rich in flavonoid antioxidants and they contain a concentrated source of micronutrients.
  • Fennel contains a number of phenolic compounds, including bioflavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, coumarins and hydroxycinnamic acids.
  • Choline, one of the active properties in Fennel, is a very important and versatile nutrient in fennel that helps with sleep, muscle movement, learning, and memory.
    • It also helps to maintain the structure of cellular membranes, aids in the transmission of nerve impulses, assists in the absorption of fat, and reduces chronic inflammation.
Red Raspberry
  • Red raspberry is a plant that is the source of a widely eaten, tasty, sweet berry. However, red raspberry fruit and leaf have also been used as medicine for centuries. The therapeutic use of raspberry leaf was first described in 1597 in a book called “The Herbal,” or “A General History of Plants.” Today, red raspberry leaf and fruit are still used as medicine.
  • Preliminary data shows that red raspberry fruit has antioxidant and vasodilatory properties. A ketone component of red raspberry possesses a similar structure to the compound capsaicin.
  • The traditional uses for Red Raspberry are for gastrointestinal (GI) tract disorders, for respiratory system disorders, and for heart health, fever and vitamin deficiency. It is also used to promote sweating, urination, and bile production. Some people use it for general "purification of skin and blood.”
Goldenseal Root
  • Goldenseal is a plant native to North America.
  • Historically, Native Americans used goldenseal for skin disorders, ulcers, fevers, and other conditions.
    • European settlers adopted it as a medicinal plant. They used it for a variety of conditions ranging from respiratory issues to stomach ailments like ulcers.
  • Currently, herbalists have continued the traditional uses of goldenseal as a dietary supplement for colds and other respiratory tract infections, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), ulcers, and digestive upsets such as diarrhea and constipation.
    • It is also used as an eyewash for eye inflammation.
  • The roots of goldenseal are dried and used to make teas, extracts, tablets, or capsules. Goldenseal is often combined with echinacea in commercial products.
  • What science has found out about goldenseal that makes it so useful for your health?
    • There are four active alkaloids that it contains, namely hydrastine, palmatine, canadine and berberine.

This is a short but comprehensive list of healthy habits for your eyes.
  • Eat right to protect your sight. You’ve heard carrots are good for your eyes. But eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens is important for keeping your eyes healthy, too.i Research has also shown there are eye health benefits from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic conditions, which can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. If you are having trouble maintaining a healthy weight, talk to your doctor.
  • Wear protective eyewear. Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home. Protective eyewear includes safety glasses and goggles, safety shields, and eye guards specially designed to provide the correct protection for a certain activity. Most protective eyewear lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 10 times stronger than other plastics. Many eye care providers sell protective eyewear, as do some sporting goods stores.
  • Quit smoking or never start. Smoking is as bad for your eyes as it is for the rest of your body. Research has linked smoking to an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness.
  • Be cool and wear your shades. Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.
  • Give your eyes a rest. If you spend a lot of time at the computer or focusing on any one thing, you sometimes forget to blink and your eyes can get fatigued. Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can help reduce eyestrain.
  • Clean your hands and your contact lenses properly. To avoid the risk of infection, always wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses. Make sure to disinfect contact lenses as instructed and replace them as appropriate.
  • Practice workplace eye safety. Employers are required to provide a safe work environment. When protective eyewear is required as a part of your job, make a habit of wearing the appropriate type at all times and encourage your coworkers to do the same.
  • The ability to see clearly depends largely on the flexibility of the lens. It has to change its shape in order to focus on the intended object. Typically with age the lens becomes less elastic and flexible, requiring glasses.
  • Eyes are constantly exposed to light which in time can generate free radicals that have harmful effects on ocular cells. With aging, pigments in our eyes change & our bodies ability to produce natural antioxidants tends to decrease.
