Herbs with a traditional history as diuretics and support kidney function.

  • The “Vitamins to Health” website lists parsley among the natural herbs used traditionally for kidney cleansing. This is based on the premise that toxic products such as urea pass through the kidneys, and if the volume of fluid going through the kidneys increases (diuretic effect) , as is seen when parsley is used, these toxins leave the body at a faster rate, which cleanses or flushes the kidneys. (Diuretic effect of parsley study)
  • Parsley is traditionally used for promoting a healthy kidney function and for being good for digestion.
  • The health benefits of parsley come from its active ingredients, namely - phenolic compounds, antioxidant flavonoids, essential oils like myristicin and apiol, and various nutrients like vitamins K, C and A.
  • This beautiful green herb also has more calcium and phosphorus than most herbs, as well as a good source of manganese, potassium, and chlorophyll.
  • Parsley and parsley essential oil have been used as a natural detox remedy, diuretic, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent for centuries in folk medicine.
  • The most common traditional use for hydrangea root is to assist the kidneys and bladder due to its effective diuretic property which helps increase the flow of urine.
  • Hydrangin is a naturally occurring phytochemical found in hydrangea. It is suggested that hydrangin is the constituent that makes hydrangeas effective against kidney stones.
  • Other valuable nutrients that can be found in hydrangeas include flavonoids like kaempferol and quercetin, and minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and sulfur, all of which are believe to contribute to better health.
  • Hydrangea is considered to be a diuretic. Traditionally Hydrangeas are used to help with increasing urine flow.
  • Hydrangea is also listed as a lithotrophic. History tells us that Hydrangeas were used to help dissolve gallbladder and kidney stones, as well as bone spurs and muscle calcification. It is assumed that the increased salts and calciums excreted in the urine may be the mechinism of action that facilitates the bone spurs and muscle calcification. There is little scientific evidence
  • The alkaloids present in hydrangea make it an effective anti-inflammatory. The alkaloids in hydrangeas seem to possess an effect similar to that of cortisone. Hydrangea has potential in easing infections and inflammations of the kidney, and relieving arthritis symptoms. (Article Link)
Uva Ursi:
    • Uva ursi also known as bearberry (because bears like eating the fruit), has been used medicinally since the 2nd century.
    • Traditionally Uva Ursi is most commonly used for treating acute urinary tract infections (UTIs).
      • Scientific research in test tubes and animals, have discovered that uva ursi's ability to fight infection are due to several chemicals, including arbutin and hydroquinone. The herb also contains tannins that have astringent effects. Astringents are said to shrink and tighten mucous membranes in the body. In turn, that helps reduce inflammation and fight infection.
      • Researchers believe that the kidneys filter arbutin, a compound found in the leaves of uva ursi, into the urine, where it acts as an antimicrobial.
    • One preliminary study found that uva ursi, when combined with dandelion root and leaf, helped prevent recurrent UTIs. (Shimizu M, Shiota S, Mizushima T, et al. Marked potentiation of activity of beta-lactams against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus by corilagin. Antimicrob Agents Chemother. 2001;45(11):3198-201.)

Health Information

What does the Kidney actually do?

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs. There are two kidneys that are located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine. The function of kidneys is to filter your blood. The filtration process removes wastes and extra water to make urine. The urine is moved to the bladder and is eventually excreted or removed from the body. Your kidneys also make hormones that help control your blood pressure, make red blood cells and keep your bones strong and healthy. Kidneys play a very important role in the overall health of your body.
  • Our kidneys perform a remarkable job of filtering and cleaning the blood.
    • Every minute more than one quart of blood passes through the kidneys, which is about 425 gallons every day!
    • Our kidneys constantly check and adjust the amounts of water, acids, salts, etc. in the blood stream, then rid the body of waste products through the urinary tract.
    • Without this balance, nerves, muscles, and other tissues in your body may not work normally.
What is a Kidney Cleanse? And why should I cleanse my kidney?
  • You might look at a kidney cleanse as a spring cleaning of sorts. One thing that should be done during a spring cleaning (for your house) clean in all of the corners and to make sure that all of the filters are clean and functioning properly.
  • Like your house it is important to do the deep cleaning that keeps any toxic buildup from becoming a problem.
  • According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) "a kidney cleanse is especially important if you’ve ever suffered with any type of infection, any type of fluid retention or any type of urinary tract infection — or if you have any kidney stone symptoms."
  • A kidney cleanse can consist of herbs, fruits and vegitables and can be accomplished by both diet and herbal supplements.

  • Parsley (herb), Uva Ursi (leaves), Juniper (berry), Marshmallow (root), Buchu (leaves), Cleavers (herb), Corn Silk, Dandelion (root), Hydrangea (root), Meadowsweet (herb), Yarrow (flowers)
