Black Cohosh.

  • Traditionally promotes a healthy liver, kidneys and lymph system, and also aids digestion. It is a very fine nervine herb and is used in many nervine combinations to help promote healthy nervous system function.
  • Black Cohosh, is laden with calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and sulfur.
  • "Early German studies found black cohosh improved physical and psychological menopausal symptoms, including anxiety, hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness." (University of Maryland Medical article)
  • In the 1920’s Lydia Pinkham had a product that featured the herb “Black Cohosh”. Her product was very effective. It was effective enough that a group of scientists wanted to do a study on the herb. They determined that Black Cohosh has an extremely high content of the hormone estrogen. This natural source of estrogen was likely the key to her formula’s success with women’s menopausal complaints. Natural estrogen seemed to be able to soothe frayed nerves, level mood swings, soften cramps and it even quiets those nasty hot flashes.

Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla)

  • An awesome herbs with a rich tradition of treating women's hormonal and menopausal issues.
  • Even though Alchemilla vulgaris is traditionally used to treat various health problems, it is known as the ‘woman’s herb’ because most of its benefits target women.
    • Traditionally the leaves are used to relieve menopausal symptoms and menstrual problems.
    • The herb contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is the principle active ingredient in asprin and was labeled as a natural pain reliever. Herbalists believe that this is why Lady's Mantle is so effective with menopausal conditions that relate to pain.

Health Information

What is MENOPAUSE and what is the difference between MENOPAUSE and PERIMENOPAUSE

Menopause actually begins 12 months after a woman's last period. Peri-menopause is actually the really uncomfortable transition to menopause. The menopausal transition most often begins between ages 45 and 55. It usually lasts about 7 years but can last as long as 14 years. During the menopausal transition, the body’s production of estrogen and progesterone, two hormones made by the ovaries, varies greatly. Bones become less dense, making women more vulnerable to fractures. During this period, too, the body begins to use energy differently, fat cells change, and women may gain weight more easily.

  • According to UCLA Health menopause is due to the depletion of ovarian follicles/oocytes and severely reduced functioning of the ovaries.
    • It is associated with lower levels of reproductive hormones, especially estrogen.
    • Low estrogen can result in vasomotor instability (such as hot flushes and night sweats),
      • Psychological changes (such as mood swings, depression, and difficulty concentrating),
      • Insomnia,
      • Genital tract atrophy (such as vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, and urinary incontinence),
      • Skin changes (such as thinning and decreased elasticity).
    • Lower androgen levels (male hormones) can contribute to the loss of sex drive.
      • Any abnormal vaginal bleeding should be reported immediately to your doctor, since this may represent a precancerous or cancerous condition of the uterus or endometrial lining.

It is important to maintain a really healthy lifestyle after menopause begins.

  • A healthy lifestyle includes:
  • A nutritious diet,
  • Supplementation
    • Vitamin D and calcium as a minimum for vitamins and minerals
    • Hormone replacement therapy of estrogen, progesterone, and possibly testosterone may help alleviate or reduce the menopausal symptoms.
