What is the Real Cost of a Sleepless Night?

Insomnia: Is defined as the habitual inability to sleep. That's the dictionary's definition. My personal definition of insomnia is spending one night after another watching television or reading or doing any annoying thing that I can to pass that long and lonely nights. There is nothing more irritating to be than spending a night awake and alone!

Some of the symptom of insomnia are

  • Difficulty falling asleep despite being tired
  • Trouble getting back to sleep when awakened
  • Getting to sleep but not sleeping deep. (REMS)
  • Waking up several time each night.
  • Waking up way too early in the morning.
  • Daytime drowsiness, fatigue, or irritability.
  • Difficulty concentrating during the day.

The lack of sleep can cause other health issues. According to Joyce Walsleben, PhD, an associate professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine. "You have to pay as much attention to your sleep as you do to eating a nutritious diet." It seems as though a good night's sleep is the first thing that goes when our lives get over burdened with stress. Being tired the next day only to fall a little more behind isn't the only thing that happens after spending a sleepless night. There are health issues that will accompany the misfortune of missing that REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep that we all need so bad. REMS is the stage of sleep that mammals get to when they dream vividly and are at their most relaxed state (muscularly). It is the stage that is almost therapeutic and certainly necessary to be able to wake completely refreshed the next morning.

There are some really simple and common people don't sleep well.

  • Can't shut your mind down because;
    • Work issues.
    • You need to fix something.
    • Social issues.
      • There is nothing in these categories that won't still be waiting for your tomorrow. The key is realizing that getting little or no sleep might make it worse rather than help to fix it.
  • You slept in;
    • Stayed out late and caught a few extra zzz's
    • Weekend habit.
      • While both are great reasons to sleep in this habit also throws off your daily clock. Keeping a consistent schedule, while not popular may help with the sleeplessness.
  • You can hear EVERYTHING!
    • It's not the noise it's the inconsistency in the noises.
      • A city dweller may not be able to sleep in the country where the silence is deafening. In the same way someone who is used to a very quiet room might have troubles with something as common as a ceiling fan that makes a little noise.

Herbs with traditional uses for sleep issues.

  • Valerian:
    • In a review of studies concerning valerian as being effective with sleep issues reviewed a total of 370 articles from sixteen randomized, controlled trials, examining a total of 1093 patients that satisfied all inclusion criteria... This systematic review suggests that valerian may improve sleep quality. (Sleep Study Article)
    • Valerian has been used traditionally as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Its therapeutic uses were described by Hippocrates, and in the 2nd century, Galen prescribed valerian for insomnia. In the 16th century, it was used to treat nervousness, trembling, headaches, and heart palpitations.
    • A study published on National Institutes of Health resulted in these findings; "After 28 days, the group receiving the valerian extract showed a decrease in insomnia symptoms on all the assessment tools compared with the placebo group."
    • "Our search yielded a total of 370 articles. Sixteen randomized, controlled trials, examining a total of 1093 patients, satisfied all inclusion criteria." ... "This systematic review suggests that valerian may improve sleep quality." (U.S. National Library of Medicine)
  • St John's Wort
    • The mechanism of action in St. Johns Wort, aka Hypericum, remains elusive, but most studies indicate a number of compounds in the plant could play significant roles as anti-depressants as well as sleep aids.
    • St. Johns Wort may stimulate the GABA receptor, a key gateway for sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain.
    • Traditionally the use of St John's Wort dates back to the ancient times of Greece, where it was used for a range of illnesses, including various nervous disorders.
    • According to the the University of Maryland Medical Center:Herbalists categorize St John's Wort as an antibacterial, antioxidant, and an antiviral herb.
      • Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it has been applied to the skin to help heal wounds and burns.Herbalists categorize St John's Wort as an antibacterial, antioxidant, and an antiviral herb.
