Losing weight has become a passion for some a disease for others. In the United States weight loss has become somewhat of an obsession. That is truly understandable when the general public eats fatty fast foods and sits in front of a computer or television in a sedentary or inactive lifestyle. The combination is a recipe for disaster if disaster is defined as; a tendency to gain weight from consuming any food that that has any appeal to one’s appetite. While people are sitting in front of the television we see movie stars, fitness experts and models that have both the time and the genetics to maintain that slender figure that us normal people can only wish for. Thus the desire to emulate the slim trim figures becomes a motive for starvation, strange inedible meals from expensive weight loss programs or whatever the latest greatest fad diet happens to be.
It’s true that there is a growing concern in the United States about the number of people that are considered to be overweight or obese. It is also true that the health risks like heart disease, heart attack and stroke are higher when a healthy body weight is not maintained. Weight loss is needed for some to be healthy but obsessing about weight loss or going about losing weight the wrong way can be just as unhealthy as being overweight. The solution is a slow steady weight loss program that involves the right kind of foods and the right amount of physical activity. This article will define healthy weight loss and some of the key elements in losing and maintain a healthy weight. Some of the elements are good foods and how they should be cooked, the part that enzymes play in maintaining a healthy body weight, food supplements that aid in healthy weight loss and meal replacement shakes.
First let’s talk about food. In traveling from country to country and from continent to continent it is very apparent that the servings are much larger in America than almost anywhere else. American’s have supersized everything! Someone could order food from nearly any of the large chain restaurants in America and end up with a plate that should feed two to three people in most other countries. Even though there seems to be a calorie counting, saturated fat eliminating movement the foods offered are still deep fried, fatty foods. French fries, bacon double cheese burgers and deep fried chicken fingers taste great but to consume meals like these on a regular basis will definitely clog arteries and play havoc with metabolism. Now add on top of that the supersized meal plan and the damage is multiplied exponentially. There are all kinds of warnings about saturated fats. There are books upon books teaching calorie and carbohydrate counting techniques. One of the most effective changes to make is, avoiding the supersized meals or asking for half plates or splitting meals with a friend. Portions are more important than content when it comes to establishing healthy eating habits.
In the fifties, sixties and seventies we were taught to eat a balanced meal with something from each of the four food groups. That principle is actually on the right track when it comes to a healthy diet plan. A healthy meal should consist of a full serving of vegetables, whole grain, and fruit. A healthy meal plan can have a small portion of meat in it, daily or from time to time, but consuming a half pound of burger for lunch and a twelve ounce steak for dinner is severely over the top. Against popular belief a serving of meat should be three to four ounces and there should be more servings of turkey, chicken and fish the beef or pork. The portions of vegetables grains and fruit should be small too. Whenever possible all of the food being served should be fresh rather than canned and seriously over processed. The really big no, no’s in a healthy diet are SODA POP, sugar, saturated fats, hydrogenated oils, starchy foods like potatoes and dairy products like milk, ice crème and butter.
