Some Awesome Herbal Information!

Garlic:
  • Traditionally herbalists have used garlic for immune system function.
  • All over the world and for thousands of years, people have been using garlic to improve their health.
  • Garlic's main active constituent is allicin. Allicin is being studied right now as a natural antibiotic.
  • An article in MDD Diagnostice "April, 2002, Vol. 5, No. 4, P. 12" describes 2 studies that have had positive results using allicin from garlic as an alternative to prescription antibiotics. (Link)
Golden Seal:
  • We have all heard of the legendary history of Goldenseal. It has historical applications with colds, flu's rashes, ulcers, urinary tract infections and even ear aches. There is not a scientific study to prove all of those uses but there are some proven benefits.
  • Goldenseal contains large quantities of berberine which may be effective in preventing bacteria from binding to urinary tract walls. (Link)
  • Research at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School has shown goldenseal's medicinal effectiveness as an immune stimulant may be due to its ability to reduce the pro-inflammatory response, which indirectly leads to the limiting of clinical symptoms during infection. (Link)
Echinacea Angustifolia:
  • Contains active substances called phenols. Phenols control a range of enzymes and cell receptors that protet the plant from infections and diseases.Phenols are also antioxidants.
  • Antioxidants are considered to be healthy for humans.
  • Echinacea also contains alkylamides or alkamides, as well as polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and caffeic acid derivatives.
  • Traditionally herbalists have used Echinacea as an immune system booster.
Myrrh:
  • This sap-like substance is collected from the cuts in the bark of trees from the Commiphora Trees. Some other names are Gugul and Mukul Myrrh trees.
  • For thousands of years the sap has been used as medicine. The list of traditional or historical uses range from indigestion and ulcers to colds, coughs and lung congestion. It was even used for such things as leprosy.
  • Myrrh has two classes of primary active compounds that lend to its efficacy in supporting a healthy immune response: sesquiterpenes and terpenoids. Studies show that sesquiterpenes and terpenoids support the body in soothing inflamed areas, while also protecting against cell damage and the formation of chronic disease. (Study Link)
  • Normally Schistomiasis (a parasitic infection) is treated with chemotherapy. Because the parasites became resistant to the drug, researchers tested myrrh on 204 patients with schistosomiasis to determine if it was effective at ridding the body of two different types of parasites: S. haematobium and S. mansoni.
    • The researchers reported in The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene that: “The drug [myrrh] was given at a dose of 10 mg/kg of body weight/day for three days, and induced a cure rate of 91.7%.

Health Information

Have you ever asked yourself what an infection is and why you get them?
An infection is an occurance that happens when a foreign organism enters a person's body and causes harm. The organism is a parasite of a sort. It uses the body as a support system to maintain its life and begin colonizing. The medical community call these organisms pathogens. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, and prions are all pathogens. The danger is that those pathogens can multiply and adapt quickly.

There are several different types of infections.
The most common infection types are Viral Infections, Bacterial Infections and Fungal Infections. There are some less common infections like protazoan infections. prion infections, helminth and ectoparasite infections.
  • Viral Infections
    • Millions of types of virus are thought to exist, but only 5,000 types have been identified. Viruses attack on the cellular level. They actually enter the cell, multiply, kill the cell and are released to infect other cells as the original cell dies and releases the disease. It is a fast process and can be over whelming to the immune system. I'm sure that this is why when something is trending in a big way on social media it is described as "GOING VIRAL".
    • The common cold, viral meningitis, warts, gastroenteritis are very common viruses
    • Zika virus, Hepititis, Polio, Influenza (the flu), H1N1 (swine flu), are some of the more serious diseases caused by a virus.
  • Bacterial Infections
    • bacteria are single celled micro-organisms. The estimated number of bacteria that exist on earth currently is at least one nonillion (that's a 1 with 30 zeros behind it).
    • Bacteria can live in almost any kind of environment from extreme heat to extreme cold. If we find the existance of life on Mars it will surley be in the form of bacteria. There are both good bacteria and bad bacteria. Some of the good bacteria live inside of the digestive tract and help to break down proteins in the digestion process. Some of the good bacteria even attack the bad bacteria as a part of an immune response to a bacterial disease.
    • Some bacterial diseases are deadly and need immediate medical attention.
      • Cholera,Dipthiria, Dysentery, Bubonic Plague, Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Bacterial Meningitis, and Typhoid.
      • Other bacterial infections include Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Gastritis, Food Poisoning, Sinusitis, Urinary Tract Infections (UTI's), Skin Infections and Sexually Trasmitted Diseases.
  • Fungal Infections
    • A fungus is a multi celled parasite. The reproduce by spreading single celled spores. Fungal infections usually appear in the upper layers of the skin. Fungal spores can also be inhaled and can lead to systemic fungal infections like thrush or candidiasis. These can affect the whole body and can mimic many other diseases in their symptomatic presentation. Remember the "GOOD BACTERIA"? The body maintains good bacteria for the purpose of keeping fungal infections at bay. It's important to keep in mind that a week immune system or over using modern antibiotics can upset that crucial balance. Both of those circumstances can contribute to a fungus becoming some sort of a disease. These infections/ diseases include but aren't limited to Valley Fever, Athlete's Foot, Ring Worm and Eye Infections like Pink Eye. Some rashes are actually fungal infections and obviously fungus under the toe nails and finger nails are fungal infections.
  • Helminth Infections
    • Helminths are larger, multicellular organisms that tend to be visible to the naked eye when full-grown. This type of parasite includes flatworms and roundworms. These are also able to infect the human body.
  • Protazoan Infections
    • Protozoa are single celled organisms with a nucleus. They can cause a protozoan infection. Protozoa commonly show features similar to animals, such as mobility, and can survive outside of the human body. They are most commonly transferred by contact with feces.
When they enter the human body, protozoa can also cause infection. Amebic dysentery is an example of a protozoan infection.
  • Ectoparasite Infections
    • Mites, ticks, lice, and fleas can cause infection by attaching or burrowing into the skin. The burrows are often the new home for their offspring.
What are some of the symptoms of an infection?
Symptoms can vary depending on exactly what kind of an infection it is and where the infection attaches itself.
Viruses tend to target specific cells, such as those in the genitals or upper respiratory tract. For example the rabies virus targets the nervous system while rhinovirus (the common cold) keeps itself in the upper respiratory tract like the sinus area the throat and nose area and on some accasions as far down as the lungs. Influenza (the flu) locates itself in similar areas to the cold but also includes the digestion tract as well. Thus a flu virus can cause a runny nose, an upset stomach or even muscle aches and pains.  Some viruses target skin cells, causing warts.
A person with a bacterial infection will often experience redness, heat, swelling, fever and pain at the site of infection. Swollen lymph glands can also be indicators of a bacterial infection.
A rash can be an indicator of a fungal infection of the skin. Other symptoms are yellowing toe nails or finger nails and itchy scaly skin on the feet mostly between the toes. More serious fungal infections might start in the lungs.

Good Stuff

I knew that garlic was good for a lot of things but I didn't realize that it would help me to get over a sore throat. I only dealt with it for 2 days!

It's a Miracle

I'm not kidding. I was worried because it was the beginning of school and I knew my kids were going to bring the sniffles, coughs and scratchy throats home. A friend told me about this so I tried it. This is the first year that I stayed healthy that I can remember. I'll use this every year now.
