Research:

Senna Seed:

  • Traditionally people in northern Africa and southwestern Asia have used senna as a digestive purge or cleanser for centuries. It was considered a "cleansing" herb because of its cathartic (purging - cleansing) effect.
  • Senna is a popular herb with certain health benefits. The leaf and the seed are the most common parts of the plant to use.
  • Some of the active constituents are compounds called anthraquinones, which are powerful and effective cleansers.
  • Senna is also used by some for other purposes. One of which is weight loss.
  • Senna is an herb that is known world wide. We believe that its popularity comes from the results people experience when used for occasional bouts of constipation.
  • Researchers have found that active compounds, called sennosides, in senna work by promoting colon contractions which of course facilitates or promotes healthy bowel movements.
  • Senna may also prevent water and electrolytes from being reabsorbed by the colon. This action is thought to increase fluid available in the intestines which may soften fecal matter or stools.
  •

    Aloe Vera:

  • Aloe vera has been known for its soothing properties for at least 6,000 years. In the early days, the plant was known for being a “plant of immortality” and was presented to Egyptian pharaohs as a funeral gift.
  • Over time, groups from many geographical areas have used aloe vera, including Indians, Chinese, Mexicans, and North Americans.
  • The Aloe Vera plant has leaves that are are thick green to grey-green and can sometimes display white spots. The plant is muck like a succulent in that the leaves are thick and contain a gel like substance.
  • Aloe Vera is most commonly used to promote health in two ways with two different parts of the plant.
  • First, the leaves are filled with a clear gel. This gel is extracted from the plant and usually used topically on the skin. Customarily it is applied to minor sun burns or scratches.
  • The second substance the plant produces is called aloe latex. This is the yellow pulp that’s found just under the outer part of the plant leaf. Aloe latex has been shown to have purgative properties, and it’s usually taken orally to to assist in promoting a healthy bowel movement.
  • Aloe latex contains aloin, which is an anthraquinone. As mentioned above anthraquinones are thought to work as peristaltic stimulents.
  • Aloe is safe to consume orally. It is thought that is provides the same soothing actions for the freshly cleansed colon as it provides for the skin when applied topically. When combining that with the purgative properties it is easy to see that Aloe Vera is a great herb vital to put in a healthy colon cleanse formula.

  • Licorice Root:

  • Centuries ago, licorice root was used in Greece, China, and Egypt for to promote proper digestion and to support healthy lung function.
  • Licorice root also has been used as a sweetener.
  • The traditions of the past have carried over into modern times. Today, people use licorice root as a dietary supplement to support proper digestion.

  •

    Guarana

  • The main herb in this formula, it’s an herb that is native to Brazil and contains caffeine.
  • The effect of the caffeine in guarana results in a boost of energy and appetite suppression.
  • One place extra pounds are stored is in the colon, as waste.
  • We added psyllium seed to SLIM to help cleanse the colon and get rid of the waste.
  •

Using Grandma’s Herbs SLIM, along with a healthy diet and exercise, has helped many with the battle in losing weight.

    Siberian Ginseng:

  • Siberian Ginseng has been used for thousands of years by the Chinese for "Qi" (pronounced chi)meaning vital energy.
  • The Chinese call Siberian Ginseng ci wu ju. Traditionally the Chinese use Siberian Ginseng to invigorate qi, strengthen the spleen, nourish the kidney and most importantly provide energy and vitality.
  • In Russians also reciognize Siberian Ginseng as a stimulent. They believe that it also invigorates the immune system.
  • Siberian Ginseng is among the five adaptogens most commonly used by Western Herbalists.
  • As an adaptogen it would fit perfectly into an herbal formula that's purpose was to boost the energy level of an individual.

  • Green Coffee Bean:

  • Green Coffee Bean grows in mountainous areas. It is literally a coffee bean that hasn't been roasted
  • Green Coffee Bean contains a compound called Chlorogenic Acid.
  • Chlorogenic Acid is a precursor to caffeine. It is a stimulent or a metabolism booster but it is not caffeine.
  • Green Coffee Bean contains a relatively elevated amount of chlorogenic acid.
  • Chlorogenic Acid is renowned for its ability to boost the metabolism. Of course as we all know metabolism is defined as the conversion of food and stored fat into energy for the body to use.
  • People who are overly sensitive to caffeine can usually tolorate Green Coffee Bean because the Chlorogenic Acid is a milder boost than caffeine.
  • Green Coffee Beans also contain Caffeoyl Derivatives, Saponins and Polyphenols.
  • Caffeoyl Derivitives are the main source of health-promoting antioxidants.
  • Saponins are bitter compounds that have certain anti-inflammatory characteristics.
  • Polyphenols are a large group of antioxidants, linked to overall healthy and well-being.

  •

    Glutamic Acid:

  • Glutamic acid is an amino acid that is formed from breaking down protein in the body.
  • Glutamic Acid is the precursor for glutamine. The human body uses this for several different bodily functions. Glutamate an excitatory neurotransmitter, meaning that it supports the nervous systen at the cellular level, (it helps nerve cells in the brain send and receive information from other cells).
  • Glutamic Acid is also important to athletes.
  • Muscles need glutamine to perform during exercise. Athletes use glutamine as a supplement to increase strength and speed.
  • Athletes and people with active life styles claim tha Glutamic Acid assist with recovery after a vigorous workout.
  • Glutamic acid supports an active lifestyle.

  •

    Aspartic Acid:

  • Aspartic Acid is another amino acid that is naturally produced by the human body by breaking down protein.
  • As a supplement Aspartic Acid is used for fatigue, athletic performance, and muscle strength/ development.
  • Some athletes claim aspartic acid improves stamina.
  • Aspartic Acid is a precursor for the production of testosterone.
  • Testosterone is a hormonal stimulator. It is produced in the adrenal cortex, the testes in men, and also the ovaries for women.
  • This may be why athletes use Aspartic Acid as a temporary booster.

    Help Me Choose:

How do I boost my energy?

As mentioned before boosting one’s energy is really a feeling. The actual mechanical process that produces energy is called metabolism. In other words, boosting energy is the same as saying boosting metabolism. There are some tricks here. Some would say that a shot of caffeine just before a workout gives the energy needed to complete the workout. Caffeine is known to increase alertness. It works by blocking the effects of adenosine, a brain chemical that makes you feel tired. At the same time, it triggers the release of adrenaline, the “fight-or-flight” hormone associated with increased energy. The downfall is just that, once the effects of caffeine where off there’s a fall. Some, in the workout world, would call that hitting the wall. There are other metabolism boosters as well. Any food that converts to glucose (sugars and starches) will also give short boosts of energy. Endurance athletes use supplements full of glucose for mid-race energy boosts.

What is the difference between caffeine and chlorogenic acid?

Interestingly enough is the fact that Chlorogenic Acid and Caffeine both come from coffee beans. The chlorogenic acid is cooked out during the coffee bean roasting process, leaving the caffeine as one of the active compounds.

Chlorogenic acid is the primary polyphenol in Green Coffee Beans, and research links it to several exciting health benefits. There are an increasing number of people that view coffee as a healthy drink because of the information that new research on Chlorogenic Acid is conjuring up. Some of the purported benefits of chlorogenic acid include positive interaction with glucose and insulin, a beneficial effect on blood pressure, and healthy cardiovascular function.

What does that really say? It says that Chlorogenic Acid is being studied and the test results are showing that it’s a heart healthy supplement that gives you a little boost of energy. When comparing it to caffeine Chlorogenic Acid is hands down the better compound to include in a metabolism boosting supplement.

Balanced herbs, vitamins and amino acids vs. Caffeine and sugar?

    Health Information:

Healthy bowels and healthy colons are the key to better health and well being!

The colon is an important part of the digestive tract. In adult humans, the colon is about twenty five feet long and connects the small intestine to the rectum. The major function of the colon is to extract water, nutrients and salts/ minerals from the partially digested food that enters from the small intestine. Approximately 2 pints of partially digested liquid matter enters the colon each day and about 1/3 of a pint of a solid stool leaves the colon each day. The difference in the volume is due to the colon’s absorption of useful and/ or valuable portions of the partially digested food such as water nutrients and minerals. This is to say that the lion’s share of everything that enters the colon is extracted from the partially digested food and introduced into the body through the colon.

Colon motility (the contraction of the muscles surrounding the colon [the peristaltic muscles] and the movement of its contents) is controlled by nerves, hormones and impulses in the colon. These rhythmic contractions slowly move the contents inside the colon toward the rectum. During this passage, the water and nutrients are absorbed into the body and what is left over is fecal matter or the stool that is to be eliminated through the rectum. A few times each day, the contractions push the stool down to the end of the colon resulting in a bowel movement. A normal bowel movement is firm but not hard, contains no blood and is completely passed without cramps or pain. If the peristaltic muscles do not contract the right way then the contents inside the colon do not move correctly, they move too quickly or too slowly. This coupled with the types of food recently consumed can create overly watery or very hard stools. As a result abdominal pain, cramps, constipation, diarrhea and a sense of incomplete stool movement can occur.
